Killing your Sin 6
The first requirement for killing your sin is conversion unto Christ. The second requirement is having a daily commitment to live for Christ. This begins, and is maintained by the following disciplines, with the Holy Spirit’s assistance.
First, the believer must guard their heart. Proverbs 4:23-27. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil. (Proverbs 4:23-27 ESV)
The follower of Jesus who seriously wants to kill their sin with all vigilance seeks to protect themselves from and observe every and all information, sights, sounds and influences affecting their eyes, mind, emotions, hearing, speech and lifestyle. The reason for this is because the heart (intellect, emotions and will) is the center of the human being.
The result of doing so is their life will be established, fixed and firm, they will discern what is, and what is not profitable, and they will depart from evil.
Second, the believer must daily fill their heart with Scripture. This entails meditating upon Scripture (Psalm 1; Psalm 119:1-16; Colossians 3:1-4), quoting Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-4), daily renewal by Scripture (Romans 12:1-2. Ephesians 4:23) and memorizing Scripture (Psalm 119:11).
Third, the believer must be involved in daily prayer (Daniel 6:10; Psalm 55:16-17; Ephesians 6:18-20; Colossians 4:1-2; I Thessalonians 5:17).
Fourth, by having an accountability partner(s). Proverbs 27:17. Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17 ESV).
Fifth, by periodically setting up memorial stones. Joshua 4. This is for the purpose of remembering what God has done in the past and how faithful He is in the present and will be in the future.
When do followers of Jesus intentionally being and continue killing their sin? Immediately!
Here are some practical suggestions to take under advisement.
- What sin(s) do you need to daily kill? If you are not sure, ask someone who you trust what sin(s) they witness in your life?
- Commit to pray with and become mutually accountable to an individual who will, with God’s strength, help you continually kill your sin. Men with men and women with women. A husband with his wife; a wife with her husband.
- Understand the even the strongest believer who God assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin ought to make their business all their days to kill the indwelling power of sin.
- Take advantage of the opportunity to set up in your life a memorial stone of commitment and reverence to God.
