Following Jesus 62

What is meant by vision? I ask this question as it pertains to believers seeking to follow Jesus. Is there such a doctrine as having a biblical vision? 

 

To begin with, in reference to leadership and goals vision refers to an aspirational, ambitious, hopeful and motivated description of what you would like to achieve or accomplish in the mid-term or long-term future. It is intended to serve as a clear guide for choosing current and future courses of action. In short, your vision is what you want to achieve or accomplish. It is your goal(s). It answers the question the question of where you, or your organization, wants to go.

 

Is there such a thing as a biblical vision for the church? If so, what is God’s vision for the church? 

 

The church is not a reference to an organization, but rather to a living organism of God called sinners unto salvation. These believers are joined together by grace alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone and are further joined in covenanting together as a local church body. God’s vision as outline in Scripture is to glorify Him. This means to give God the praise and honor which is due Him because He is glorious. Glory literally means weight, or heaviness. The Word of God in speaking of the glory of God (Psalm 19:1; Isaiah 6:3; Isaiah 63:2; James 2:1) refers to the heaviness, awesomeness and intrinsic or core and deep-rooted worth of God’s being. God’s glory refers to His nature, which is holy.

 

At times in the Old Testament, the manifestation of God’s glory resembled a brilliant appearance of light (Leviticus 9:23; Exodus 33:18). 

 

Jesus Christ’s advent involved an appearance of the glory of the Lord (Luke 2:9; 14; 32). The glory, or the fullness of all that God is, is now shared by the believer due to God’s sovereign grace unto salvation (Romans 8:30; 2 Corinthians 4:6). 

 

In the resurrected state, the believer in Christ will be completely conformed to the glorified Savior (1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 21:23). 

 

Presently, each follower of Jesus Christ is called upon to be like salt and light. Jesus said,

 

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16 ESV)
