Following Jesus 158
Following Jesus: The Progress of the Pilgrim.
In Ephesians 6:10-20, the first command given to the believer before God is simply to Be Strong. 6:10. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.”
The second command is to Be Prepared. 6:11a. “Put on the whole armor of God,”
The third command is to Stand Firm. 6:13. “Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
The fourth statement is not a command but rather an encouragement to all believers. It is found in Ephesians 6:18-20 which says, “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.” We are to Be Praying.
Our prayers are to include our entire being: mind, emotions and will. We are to pray in the Spirit, which means to be in obedience to the Holy Spirit. In short, to pray in conformity to the Word of God. This is to be done in a general attitude and in our specific requests.
The purpose of such discipline so the believer will keep alert in the spiritual conflict surrounding him. This is to be done with all perseverance. Even when it is difficult.
We need to pray not just for ourselves, but for others also. We all engage in spiritual war and we therefore are all in need of prayer. Who are you praying for today? Who may you encourage who is battling the devil and his fallen angels?
Fight the good fight of faith today (I Timothy 6:12).
Soli deo Gloria!
